Sustainable development, which includes community development, environmental protection, natural resource conservation, and local economic development, is becoming more widely practiced in Europe, while lagging behind as a US development strategy. Since sustainable development planning requires civic planners and private developers to understand a number

of new disciplines and to address their interconnections, it has been difficult for working professionals to gain an overview and access to specific implementation strategies. The author presents an outline of the key features of sustainable development that should be considered in new development, with extensive web references for more in-depth information on each topic.
